Semana JIM was founded by PEDAL PhD student Paulina Pérez-Duarte Mendiola, who was inspired by her experiences as a clinical paediatrician in Mexico. Semana JIM is a virtual space for Spanish-speaking healthcare students and professionals who want to:
- Learn how to provide child-centred medical care to improve their paediatric clinical practice.
- Inspire other healthcare professionals and younger generations to acquire a ‘pro-play’ mindset.
- Meet other paediatric healthcare professionals interested in this innovative area of knowledge and discover new professional opportunities.
Since launching in 2021, Semana JIM has run a virtual course for Play in Hospital Week for Spanish-speaking healthcare students and professionals. The course will run for the fourth time this year and you can see more details about what this year’s sessions will cover and some FAQs below.
What will the course cover?
- Wednesday: How to prescribe play
- Thursday: How to guide parents in play opportunities for chronically ill children
- Friday: Playful allies – organisations who are pro-play in Mexico and Latin America
- Saturday: Testimonial from Christi Escalera, mother of Danna who lost eyesight in both eyes due to Retinoblastoma. Christi will share how she and Danna re-learned how to play, and how play has changed for them.

When is the course taking place?
This online course will run from Wednesday 4th December – Saturday 7th December. There will be a 60 minute virtual presentation at 15:00 – 16:00 (GMT)* each day, followed by a 30 minute networking session.
*Please note that this is the UK time, which equates to 9:00 – 10:00 in Mexico and 16:00 – 17:00 in Spain. Please check timings carefully if you are attending virtually from another country!
We recommend attending the sessions live to get the most from the course and to allow you to connect and network with other attendees, although recordings will be available for those who are unable to attend live on the day.
How much does the course cost?
The online course is priced at 1300 MXN (Mexican peso), which is approximately equivalent to £50 / $70 /€60. Alternatively, you can pay an additional fee to access ALL content recorded in 2021, 2022 and 2023 as well as the 2024 live content. You can also “adopt” a Spanish-speaking student and donate towards the cost of their course fee. This allows students who may not otherwise be able to afford it to attend the course. You can see more about Semana JIM’s #AdoptaUnEstudiante scheme here.
